Think Athiest

Haven't been on in a while but thought i'd share
"Mine goes like this (assuming I'm talking to a christian): Your religion teaches that if you do not accept Jesus Christ as your personal lord and savior you will burn for eternity in hell. More or less. No matter if you are a good person, or are equally devout in another faith. The religion you have as an adult is hugely dependent on the time and place of your birth. If God chose to have you born today to a poor family in India, your chances of converting to christianity to be saved are near zero. If you were born in South America before the conquistador's came, you were not going to hear about Jesus. In essence, God chooses certain people to burn for eternity and they have no say in the matter.

Religion is like football. Everyone wants to believe their home team is special, but the fact is they only think so because they were born there.

there is no credible evidence for the existence of god. two things are generally proffered as evidence of god, scripture and the natural world (argument from perceived design).

1) scripture is mere hearsay, or as more accurately stated by thomas paine: "hearsay upon hearsay". hearsay is generally inadmissible in state and federal court because it is notoriously unreliable. if hearsay isn't reliable enough for use to adjudicate simple disputes, it certainly isn't reliable enough to prove absurd stories about a god upon which you think i should base my life.

2) the natural world provides no more evidence for the existence of your god than it does for the thousands of gods imagined throughout history, which is to say, none. our ignorance relating to precisely how this all came about doesn't justify your speculation that a wizard did it."

A Few Passages of Note

Every now and then I get bored and hit 'next blog' hoping to find something interesting/noteworthy.  What annoys me most through the ramblings of other people's blogs is that there's a bunch of bible quotes about the wonders of God.  That's all well and good, but no one notes the passages that show how Christianity has been dragged, kicking and screaming whilst we, as a society, broaden our social and ethical horizons.

Why do Christians pick and choose what they want to follow in the bible?  If it's the word of God one would think that everything said is truth and should be followed, right? Apparently not.  Anywho, below are a few choice passages that you may find interesting.

Who should we kill?

- Homosexuals (Lev. 20:13 Rom. 1:26-32)
- Adulterers (Lev 20:10 Deut. 22:22)
- Disobedient children (Deut 21:20-21, Lev 20:9, Exod 21:15)
- Women who are not virgins on their wedding night (Deut. 22:13-21)
- All non-Christians (parable told by Christ - Luke 19:27)
- Those accused of wickedness by at least two people (Deut 17:2-7)
- Anyone who works on the Sabbath (Exod 35:2-3, Num 15:32-6)

Women

- It is 'shameful' for a woman to speak in church (1Cor 14:34-35)
- A man must OK his wife's words if they are to have force (Num 30:8)
- A woman must not teach or hold authority over a man (1Tim 2:12)
- Lot saves the messengers from the men of Sodom by offering up his virgin daughters to 'do to them as you please' (gen 19:8)
- 'Kill every women who has slept with a man, but save for youurself every girl who has never slept with a man' (Moses - Num 31:17-8)

Slavery

- God supports slavery (Lev 25:44-6, Exod 21:2-8, Eph 6:5, Col 3:22)
- Instructions on how to sell your daughter as a slave (Exod 21:7-8)
- When to give your slaves 'severe' or 'light' beatings (Luke 12:42-8)
- OK to beat slaves only if they don't die within 2 days (Exod 21:20-1)
- How to mark your slave: drive an awl though its ear (Deut 15:17)

Some may say, 'whatever is in the old testament doesn't apply to today's modern society.' According to Christ in (Matt 5:17-9), I beg to differ.

The Universe

The very fact that we can see the stars at night proves the universe is billions of years older than Creationists state it is.

Light Travels at approximately 12million miles per minute

The nearest star outside our own solar system is approximately 800,000 light years away

So the fact that  we can see the light from that star, as well as billions of others, is tangible proof that the universe is way older than 6000 years.

I AM NOT WRONG

(God puts the stars there to test us is a lazy and desperate excuse, much like the Dinosaur bone excuse)

On another note, how astonishing is that picture.  The brain cell of a mouse, only micrometers wide and a simulated image of the universe, billions of light years across.  The stark similarities are astounding.  That can't just be coincidental, can it?

Amirite?

The only reason i'd accept Christianity or any other religion as my faith is pascal's wager. The cost of Christianity is slim to none and the benefits are eternal whereas there is nothing to be gained from atheism, but why do I still remain one?  Discuss.
