A Few Passages of Note

Every now and then I get bored and hit 'next blog' hoping to find something interesting/noteworthy.  What annoys me most through the ramblings of other people's blogs is that there's a bunch of bible quotes about the wonders of God.  That's all well and good, but no one notes the passages that show how Christianity has been dragged, kicking and screaming whilst we, as a society, broaden our social and ethical horizons.

Why do Christians pick and choose what they want to follow in the bible?  If it's the word of God one would think that everything said is truth and should be followed, right? Apparently not.  Anywho, below are a few choice passages that you may find interesting.

Who should we kill?

- Homosexuals (Lev. 20:13 Rom. 1:26-32)
- Adulterers (Lev 20:10 Deut. 22:22)
- Disobedient children (Deut 21:20-21, Lev 20:9, Exod 21:15)
- Women who are not virgins on their wedding night (Deut. 22:13-21)
- All non-Christians (parable told by Christ - Luke 19:27)
- Those accused of wickedness by at least two people (Deut 17:2-7)
- Anyone who works on the Sabbath (Exod 35:2-3, Num 15:32-6)

Women

- It is 'shameful' for a woman to speak in church (1Cor 14:34-35)
- A man must OK his wife's words if they are to have force (Num 30:8)
- A woman must not teach or hold authority over a man (1Tim 2:12)
- Lot saves the messengers from the men of Sodom by offering up his virgin daughters to 'do to them as you please' (gen 19:8)
- 'Kill every women who has slept with a man, but save for youurself every girl who has never slept with a man' (Moses - Num 31:17-8)

Slavery

- God supports slavery (Lev 25:44-6, Exod 21:2-8, Eph 6:5, Col 3:22)
- Instructions on how to sell your daughter as a slave (Exod 21:7-8)
- When to give your slaves 'severe' or 'light' beatings (Luke 12:42-8)
- OK to beat slaves only if they don't die within 2 days (Exod 21:20-1)
- How to mark your slave: drive an awl though its ear (Deut 15:17)

Some may say, 'whatever is in the old testament doesn't apply to today's modern society.' According to Christ in (Matt 5:17-9), I beg to differ.

Those rules were all terminated when Jesus died on the cross. None of them apply now.

  5. So, ProjectXero, in your opinion, whatever Christ said before he was crucified is null? Doesn't quite add up to me. And continuing with this 'chopping' and 'choosing' what aspects of the bible they wish to believe, i'd like to show this quote from Steven Weinberg (Noble Prize winning physicist):

"Some people have views of God that are so broad and flexible that it is inevitable that they will find God wherever they look for him. One hears it said that 'God is ultimate' or 'God is our better nature' or 'God is the universe.' Of course, like any other word, the word 'God' can be given any meaning we like. If you want to say that 'God is energy,' then you can find God in a lump of coal."

Just thought it interesting and a tad relevant.

  7. I have the same problem with people picking and choosing what to believe. It's not when they do it for their own benefit though, it's when they push it on everyone else that it bothers me. Looking forward to hearing more from you. +followed
